A Call for Beacons

In 2012, I was able to attend the Constructing Modern Knowledge (CMK) Summer Institute. It is a professional learning opportunity hosted by Gary Stager and Sylvia Martinez – of Invent To Learn fame – along with a faculty of “educational pioneers, bestselling authors, and inventors of educational technologies.” It’s a mind-on/hands-on experience into constructionist learning – not by listening, but by doing deep, rich project work. Provocations: A Constructionism Methodology

How to Host a Maker Dine and Design Evening

As part of MVIFI’s hosting work, we’ve created an evening of fellowship and fun for people to learn more about maker-centered learning environments. The goals of the evening involve helping participants recognize, through direct experience, (1) that deep minds-on learning is connected to hands-on learning; (2) that new tools and materials for creation are more accessible than ever before; (3) that while learning to create something is an individual endeavor, it is often a community of learners that enable/enhance/enrich that learning for […]

Collider – An MVIFI XLR8r: Reimagining “Faculty Work Day” #MVCollider

Why do we manage and lead our professional learning days like we do? What if MVIFI (the Mount Vernon Institute for Innovation) reimagined our October “faculty work day” and ran it as an in-house conference? In this post from Team #MVIFI, you can find the following: A bit of background about how we decided on and designed the Collider workshop model. We offer this process section for other schools who might be wondering how to reimagine their own professional development days. […]
