Project Description

The third grade at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School has a unit that focuses on the U.S. system of government, which culminates with an election. Leading up to that day there is a campaign by students, including speeches by the candidates and posters around school with slogans and campaign platforms. The work is done exclusively by the third grade, while the rest of the students in the Lower School get to exercise their civic responsibilities within the democratic process by voting.

A class of fourth graders however, had the additional responsibility of creating the computer voting booths for the election. Using Scratch, students created an interface that interacted with the voters and tracked the number of votes each candidate received. At the end of the election, it was their machines that calculated the winners!
